Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury, who already held the record for most points scored in WNBA history, became the first player in league history to score 10,000 points. Taurasi needed 18 points going into Thursday night's game at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, where she was playing in front of a sold-out crowd. The 41-year-old made the record-setting shot against the Atlanta Dream in the third quarter, from long beyond the arc. Play was instantly halted as Taurasi gathered in a huddle with her teammates around halfcourt to celebrate, arms waving and the audience roaring in shouts. First Player in WNBA History to Amass 10,000 PointsIn the Mercury's 91-71 victory over the Dream, the former MVP ended with a season-high 42 points, the highest she's ever scored in regulation in a game. Soccer sportsbooks reported that Taurasi, at age 35, is the league's oldest player to have a 40-point performance. According to basketball and soccer predictions, Taurasi was spotted hugging teammate Brittney Griner, who had to skip the game for the third time in a row due to mental health issues, after the game. After a great undergraduate career at UConn, where she helped lead the Huskies to three straight NCAA titles, the Mercury selected Taurasi with the first overall choice in 2004.
