The previous several days have set the stage for what promises to be an exciting 2023–24 Big East championship campaign. This week, the league play ended with a loss for UConn at Seton Hall, Creighton at Villanova, and a significant win for first-year coach Kim English's Providence Friars at Marquette. A win against Wisconsin and defeats by Kansas State and Oklahoma were the highlights of Providence's nonconference campaign. Some were skeptical about English's team heading into league action because of the limited sample size vs high-quality opponents. The Friars responded admirably defensively against Marquette, limiting the Golden Eagles to 57 points (a season-low) on a shooting performance worse than any they had seen all year (32.1 percent). Regarding preventing opponents from shooting more than 37-9 from the field, Providence is rated 16th in the country. According to NCAA basketball news, Providence has a defense, which may have contributed to their massive win against Marquette, but an outstanding home-court advantage isn't the only factor. According to the most recent power rankings, the Friars are prepared to cause a stir in the Big East. College Basketball Power RankingsOn Saturday, with their 92-84 victory over Arizona, Purdue decided who should be ranked #1. The single setback the Boilermakers have suffered was an overtime road loss to a solid Northwestern squad, and their record speaks for itself. It took guts for Kansas to return from a 13-point hole and beat Indiana in their first real road game. Although the Jayhawks lack depth, their top four scorers are spectacular. Going into Big 12 play, Coach Bill Self's squad will probably be 12-1. On Wednesday night, Arizona bounced back from their defeat to Purdue with an 87-74 victory over Alabama. The Wildcats won another solid nonconference game, with all five starters posting double-digit points. Do you want to start a sportsbook before March Madness?
