The two and a half weeks of March Madness are here, and with them comes the reveal of champions and the destruction of brackets. The element of surprise that characterizes March Madness is primarily due to Cinderella stories. According to the latest NCAA basketball news reports, the Princeton Tigers, seeded fifteenth in the men's tournament last year, had an unexpected run. They knocked out the second-seeded Arizona Wildcats and the seventh-seeded Missouri Tigers to go to the Sweet 16. Neither the previous nor the current school with modest hopes to make a splash in March can be said for Princeton. Six times since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, a school with a double-digit seed has made it to the Final Four. Only the No. 8 Villanova Wildcats in 1985 became the lowest seed to win it all, and none of those teams became national champions. Take a stroll down memory lane with these iconic Cinderella runs. Cinderellas of the March MadnessIn 2006, George Mason University took collegiate basketball by storm, becoming one of the first big underdog tales of March Madness in the previous 20 years. After dropping their last regular season game to the Hofstra Pride, the Patriots entered the tournament with a record of 23-7. George Mason has won four in a row under head coach Jim Larranaga, with three of those victories coming against supposedly "blue-blood" institutions. Before he became a superstar with the Warriors, Stephen Curry guided his alma mater to their best March Madness run ever. Despite starting the tournament on a 22-game winning run, the Wildcats were only seeded tenth. With the two-time NBA MVP on board, it was irrelevant. In the first quarter, Curry scored 40 points, 30 of which came in the first half, and knocked down eight three-pointers to help his team pull off a miraculous comeback victory. According to FanDuel sportsbook reports, Virginia Commonwealth University made history in the first-ever "First Four" games as they advanced to the Final Four. In a perfect storm, VCU went on a five-game winning streak, with four victories coming by double digits, to earn a spot in the Final Four. Coach Shaka Smart's lively antics on the sidelines stood out during the Cinderella run.
