For almost twenty years, many have argued that Atlantic City's casinos should not allow smoking on the floor. Currently, casinos in New Jersey can legally let customers light up inside their establishments as long as it doesn't exceed 25% of their gaming floors—a so-called "loophole" in the state's Smoke-Free Air Act. But aside from that one exemption, the Act generally forbids smoking in all state-owned buildings and some enclosed spaces. A new measure proposes to add a few restrictions to the existing ban that prohibits smoking inside 25 percent of casino gaming floors while the discussion about smoking continues. The measure, S2651, was filed earlier this week in the Senate and has the support of Senator John Burzichelli. Non-smoking campaigners have dubbed it preserving the status quo. The Senate Committee on Health, Human Services, and Senior Citizens will now examine and evaluate the idea. Despite being a new measure, most of its provisions maintain Atlantic City's existing regulations on indoor smoking at casinos. The measure would keep the current regulation that prohibits casinos from allowing smoking within their establishments within a quarter of their gaming floors, as previously said. The Casinos of Atlantic City and SmokingHowever, according to S2651, it's okay to smoke in designated smoking areas with slot machines as long as they're at least 15 feet away from the tables where the dealers are. The idea would also make it possible for casinos to have smoking sections of the floor that are marked and isolated from the rest of the casino. Gambling news reports show dealers interested in working in specific regions must indicate their agreement before being allocated to the role. The anti-smoking organization Casino Employees Against Smoking Harmful Effects immediately noticed the suggestion (CEASE). The organization released a statement in which they claimed Burzichelli's suggestion was "copied and pasted." The anti-smoking group has stressed again that a competing law outright banning smoking in enclosed spaces is the only one with a chance of passing with enough backing. If such a plan gains sufficient momentum and support, Governor Phil Murphy has already stated that he intends to approve it. Concerning the Governor's backing, CEASE has forecasted that Burzichelli's measure will not go further. Do you want to venture into the gambling industry?
